Connecting Your Reddit Account

September 1, 2026

This is the second tutorial in the Automating & Expanding series. Background scanning is running — now connect Reddit so you can search more often without tripping Reddit's rate limits.

Why Connect Reddit?

By default, Engaggit scans Reddit through its internal browser — an embedded browser that uses a regular Reddit session. This works well for occasional scanning. But if you're doing a lot of searches — many keywords, short intervals, frequent "Scan now" runs — Reddit can start rate-limiting or even blocking that anonymous browsing traffic.

Connecting Reddit gives your scanning a stable, authorised identity. The primary benefit:

  • Safer, more frequent scanning — authorised traffic is far less likely to be rate-limited or blocked
  • More consistent results — fewer "please wait" errors and interrupted scans
  • Lower risk of a block — especially important on short scan intervals

Two Connection Methods

Engaggit supports two ways to connect to Reddit:

Method How It Works Best For
Internal Browser Opens Reddit.com inside Engaggit; you log in normally; scanner uses your session Quick setup, light scanning
Reddit API Credentials Enter a Client ID and Secret from Reddit's developer portal Heavy scanners who need authorised, block-resistant traffic

You don't need to choose upfront — you can use both, or start with the internal browser and add API credentials later if your scanning grows.

Method 1: Internal Browser (Recommended)

This is the simplest way to get started. You log in to Reddit through a browser window inside Engaggit, and the scanner uses that session.

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Settings (gear icon in the sidebar)
  2. Go to the Reddit Account tab
  3. Find the "Internal browser" section
  4. Click "Open internal browser" — a browser window opens showing reddit.com
  5. Log in to Reddit normally (your existing account)
  6. Close the browser window — you're connected

That's it. Engaggit's scanner now uses your Reddit session for its searches.

Why This Is Secure

  • The login happens on Reddit's servers — Engaggit never sees your password
  • Only a session token is stored locally on your machine
  • Your credentials never touch Engaggit's servers (there are no Engaggit servers — the app runs entirely on your machine)

Method 2: Reddit API Credentials (Advanced)

If you plan to scan heavily — lots of keywords, short intervals — connecting via the Reddit API is the safer choice. Authorised API traffic is treated differently by Reddit and is far more forgiving of frequent searching than anonymous browsing.

When to Use This

  • You scan frequently or have many keywords
  • You've run into rate limits or blocks with the internal browser
  • You want a more stable, authorised connection

Step-by-Step

  1. Go to reddit.com/prefs/apps
  2. Click "create another app..."
  3. Choose "script" type
  4. Set a name (e.g., "engaggit"), redirect URI to http://localhost:8080
  5. Note the Client ID (under the app name) and Client Secret
  6. In Engaggit, go to Settings → Reddit Account
  7. Enter your Client ID and Client Secret
  8. Click Save

The status indicator changes to Configured (green), and scans will use the Reddit API instead of the internal browser.

Note: API credentials are optional. The internal browser method works perfectly well for light scanning. Move to the API if you're scanning heavily.

Search Delay

Under Advanced options in the Reddit Account settings, you'll find a Search delay setting. This controls the pause between individual Reddit searches during a scan — a key lever for avoiding rate limits:

Delay When to Use
1–3 seconds Short keyword lists, low risk of rate limiting
5–10 seconds (default) Most users — safe for typical scan sizes
15–30 seconds Large keyword lists, or if you've hit rate limits
60–120 seconds Very large scans, heavy API usage

Reddit rate-limits aggressive searching. If you see repeated errors during scans, increase this value — or connect via the Reddit API for an authorised connection.

Proxy Settings (Optional)

If you need to route your internal browser traffic through a proxy (e.g., for anonymity or network requirements), you can configure a SOCKS5 proxy under Advanced options:

  1. Check "Enable proxy"
  2. Enter the proxy address (e.g., 127.0.0.1)
  3. Enter the port (default: 1080)

The proxy applies to the internal browser only — it doesn't affect the AI provider or other app functions.

Troubleshooting

Issue Solution
Scan errors mentioning rate limits Increase your search delay, or connect via the Reddit API
"Not configured" status Enter API credentials or use the internal browser login
Session expired / scans failing Open the internal browser and log in again
Proxy connection failed Verify the proxy address and port; make sure the proxy server is running

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does Engaggit store my Reddit password?

No. Whether you use the internal browser or API credentials, your password never touches Engaggit. The internal browser uses a session token; API credentials use a Client ID and Secret (which don't grant password access).

2. Can I use multiple Reddit accounts?

Currently, Engaggit supports one active Reddit connection at a time. If you need to switch accounts, clear the current credentials and reconnect.

3. Will connecting Reddit let me post replies from the app?

No — Engaggit doesn't post replies for you. Its job is finding and analysing relevant posts. You draft and post replies yourself, and connecting Reddit's main purpose is making your scanning safer and more resistant to blocks.

4. How do I know if I need the Reddit API vs the internal browser?

If you're seeing rate-limit errors, interrupted scans, or blocks while scanning heavily, connect via the Reddit API. If you scan lightly, the internal browser is fine.

5. Does the search delay affect anything other than scanning?

No — the search delay only controls the pause between individual searches during a scan. It doesn't affect anything else.
